Susan Waruguru Kahumba of Mombasa, Kenya is the first ever Miss Universe Kenya. She represented the African country at Miss Universe 1987.
Hosted by Bob Barker and Mary Frann, the Miss Universe 1987 coronation ceremony was held at the World Trade Centre in Singapore on May 27, 1987. It was broadcast by CBS and SBC.
Kahumba competed against 67 other candidates. She was unplaced.
Despite the loss, Kahumba should be proud as the first ever Miss Universe candidate representing Kenya. In the same competition, Hoda Abboud and Susse Petersen became the first ever Miss Universe candidates from Egypt and Greenland, respectively.
It was the 36th edition of Miss Universe. Cecilia Carolina Bolocco Fonck of Chile won the title while Roberta Capua of Italy is her runner-up.
Michelle Renee Royer of the United States, Inés María Calero Rodríguez of Venezuela and Laurie Tamara Simpson Rivera of Puerto Rico are the respective second, third and fourth runners-up. No candidate from Africa made it to the Top 10.
