Jorge Masvidal, 21, of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States is now a professional mixed martial arts champion. The Cuban-Peruvian-American MMA fighter headlined Absolute Fighting Championship‘s 17th event along with Nuri Shakir, 26, of Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA.

Featuring 11 MMA matches, “AFC 17” was held at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida on June 24, 2006. In the main event, Masvidal and Shakir battled it out for the vacant AFC Welterweight Championship title.
Jorge Alonso served as the referee of the title bout. After three 5-minute rounds, he raised the hand of Masvidal, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.
Losing to Masvidal downgraded Shakir’s professional MMA record to 12 wins and 11 losses. The fighter from Nashua made his professional MMA debut on May 20, 2000.
On the other hand, Masvidal now has 8 wins and 2 losses. It was his first professional MMA fight in Boca Raton.

Born and raised in Miami, Masvidal attended St. Brendan High School in Westchester, Miami-Dade County. While in high school, he competed in wrestling but he failed to stay eligible because of his grades.
On May 24, 2003, Masvidal made his professional MMA debut. The first seven opponents he defeated were Brandon Bledsoe, Brian Geraghty, Rolando Delgado, Julian Ortega, Justin Wisniewski, Joe Lauzon and David Gardner.
