Lebanon is home to Miss Universe 1971 Georgina Rizk and Miss International 2002 Christina Sawaya. The country is located between Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south while Cyprus lies to its west across the Mediterranean Sea.
On November 22, 1943, the French Mandate over Lebanon ended and on October 24, 1945, the country joined the United Nations as as a founding member state. Israeli troops were withdrawn from Lebanon on May 24, 2000 and Syrian troops followed suit on April 30, 2005.
Émile Lahoud, 71, assumed office as the 16th president of Lebanon on November 24, 1998. His term ended on November 24, 2007 and his successor has yet to be elected.
