Born in Mossel Bay, Western Cape Province, South Africa, Lodewicus Theodorus “Louis” Oosthuizen turned 27 on October 19, 2009. Nine months later, he won a major golf championship for the first time.

In 2002, Oosthuizen made his professional golf debut. In 2003, he played on the European Challenge Tour.

Since 2004, Oosthuizen has been a member of the European Tour. That year, he won the Vodacom Origins of Golf Tour event.

In 2007, Oosthuizen won the Dimension Data Pro-Am, Platinum Classic and the Telkom PGA Championship. In 2008, he won the Telkom PGA Championship again.

On July 18, 2010, the Mossel Bay native won the 150th edition of The Open Championship also known as the British Open. The prize fund was £4,800,000.

As the winner, Oosthuizen received £850,000. Runner-up to the South African golfer was Lee Westwood of England, who received £500,000.

Paul Casey, 32, of England, Rory McIlroy, 21, of Northern Ireland and Henrik Stenson, 34, of Sweden tied for third. They each received £256,667.

In 2008, Westwood tied for third at the U.S. Open and in 2009, he tied for third in the PGA Championship. On April 11, 2010, he was runner-up to 2010 Masters Tournament champion Phil Mickelson, 40, of the United States.
