Kim Antonie Lode Clijsters and her younger sister Elke Clijsters were born in Bilzen, Limburg, Belgium to Lei Clijsters and Els Vandecaetsbeek. Kim and Elke grew up in Bree, Limburg.

As a professional football defender, Lei played for Belgian First Division clubs including KV Mechelen. Vandecaetsbeek was a Belgian national artistic gymnastics champion.

On August 17, 1997, Kim made her professional tennis debut. Elke made her professional tennis debut in 2000.

In 2004, Elke retired due to a back injury. Earlier that year, she and Kim entered one doubles tournament together on the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour in the Diamond Games in Antwerp, Belgium.

In 2005, Kim started dating Brian Robert Lynch, a professional basketball player born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, United States. He played college basketball at Villanova University in Villanova, Pennsylvania, USA from 1996 to 2000.

On September 11, 2005, Kim won the 2005 US Open women’s singles in New York City, New York, USA. It was her first ever grand slam tennis victory.

On July 13, 2007, Kim and Lynch got married in Bree. On February 27, 2008, she gave birth to Jada Ellie Lynch in Tongeren, Limburg.

On September 14, 2009, Kim won the 2009 US Open women’s singles in New York City. On January 18, 2010, Elke turned 25.

On June 8, 2010, Kim turned 27 and on June 12, 2010, Lynch turned 32. On September 13, 2010, she won the 2010 US Open women’s singles.
