Born in the Thruepang Palace in Trongsa, Bhutan, third Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuck declared Thimphu as the capital of the kingdom in 1961. He turned 44 on May 2, 1972 and died in Nairobi, Kenya on July 21, 1972.
From 1972 to 2006, Jigme Singye Wangchuck reigned as the fourth Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan. Born at the Dechencholing Palace in Thimphu, he turned 54 on November 11, 2009.
On November 6, 2008, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck was officially crowned the fifth Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan. Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, he turned 30 on February 21, 2010.
Miss Bhutan 2008
Born in Thimphu, Tsokye Tsomo Karchung won the inaugural edition of Miss Bhutan at the YDF Auditorium in Thimphu on October 10, 2008. She competed against 18 other candidates.
Runner-up to Karchung was Shelkar Choden of Trongsa. The respective second, third and fourth runners-up were Tshering Pem of Trashigang, Tashi Pelden of Wangdue and Kinga Wangmo of Paro.
Karchung represented Bhutan at Miss Earth 2008 in the Philippines, Miss Young International 2008 in Taiwan and Miss Safari 2008 in Kenya. She turned 26 on August 20, 2010.
Miss Bhutan 2010
On September 25, 2010, Karchung will crown her successor in Thimphu. It is the second edition of the national Bhutanese beauty pageant founded by Karma Tshering.
There are 18 women competing for the Miss Bhutan 2010 crown. They are from different parts of Bhutan including Bumthang, Samtse, Thimphu, Wangdue and Zhemgang.
