“Sparkle” is a musical film distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing Corporation, which is based in Culver City, California, United States. It hit theaters in the U.S. on August 17, 2012.

On the same day, Universal Records Philippines released “MKNM: Mga Kwento ng Makata”. It is the sixth studio album of Aristotle Condenuevo Pollisco, who is professionally known as Gloc-9.

“Sparkle”

Oakland, California native Salim Akil directed “Sparkle”. The screenplay was written by his wife Mara Brock Akil, a Compton, California native, based on Sam O’Steen‘s 1976 film of the same name.

The remake stars Jordin Sparks as Sparkle Anderson, who is approached by Derek Luke‘s character, an aspiring record label executive named Stix, to form a girl group. Her strict mother Emma Anderson is played by Whitney Houston.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, USA, Houston turned 48 on August 9, 2011 and died in Beverly Hills, California on February 11, 2012. The new “Sparkle” film was shot in Detroit, Michigan, USA from October 2011 to November 2011.

Also in the cast is gospel singer Tamela Mann. Both she and her husband David Mann were born in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.

“MKNM: Mga Kwento ng Makata”

U.S. Army veteran Jack V. Crawford was born in Ranger, Texas to N.B. Crawford and Laura Crawford. Jack and Marietta “Mayette” Ledesma Crawford‘s son Billy Joe Ledesma Crawford was born in Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Jack worked as an oil company consultant in the Philippines where he met Mayette. She is from Jaro, Iloilo City, Philippines.

Billy is one of the featured artists in “MKNM: Mga Kwento ng Makata”. Gloc-9 wrote all of the 14 songs in the album, which he executive produced with Kathleen Dy-Go.
