Representing Austria, “Rise Like a Phoenix” won the 59th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The song was written by Alexander Zuckowski, Charlie Mason, Joey Patulka and Julian Maas and recorded by Thomas “Tom” Neuwirth, a drag queen professionally known as Conchita Wurst.

On September 10, 2013, Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF) announced that it had selected Wurst as its performer for Eurovision Song Contest 2013. On March 18, 2014, broadcaster and news website announced “Rise Like a Phoenix” as Austria’s entry for the international competition.

Conchita Wurst

Wurst was born in Gmunden, Austria and raised in Bad Mitterndorf, Salzkammergut, Styria, Austria. In 2002, he moved to Graz, Styria to attend school with a focus on fashion.

In 2006, Wurst competed in “Starmania” Season 3, which aired on ORF1. He was runner-up to Nadine Beiler, who was born in Inzing, Tyrol, Austria.

Born in Innsbruck, Austria, Andi Knoll hosted “Die große Chance”, which aired on ORF1 from September 9, 2011 to November 11, 2011. Christine Hödl won the talent competition show while Wurst finished sixth.

In 2012, Wurst finished second in Österreich rockt den Song Contest, which selected Austria’s Eurovision Song Contest entry. On November 6, 2013, he turned 25.
