The Falkland Islands is a self-governing British overseas territory in South America. Located in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf, the territory is an archipelago comprising East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands.
In 1840, the Falkland Islands became a crown colony. It has full internal self-government under the Falkland Islands Constitution Order 2008, a statutory instrument of the United Kingdom.
