The Republic of Lebanon is a country in Western Asia. The country is located between Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south while Cyprus lies to its west across the Mediterranean Sea.
On November 22, 1943, the French Mandate over Lebanon ended and on October 24, 1945, the country joined the United Nations as as a founding member state. Israeli troops were withdrawn from Lebanon on May 24, 2000 and Syrian troops followed suit on April 30, 2005.
Michel Suleiman, 66, is the incumbent and 12th president of Lebanon. He assumed office on May 25, 2008.
