The Republic of Lebanon is a country in Western Asia. The country is located between Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south while Cyprus lies to its west across the Mediterranean Sea.
On November 22, 1943, the French Mandate over Lebanon ended and on October 24, 1945, the country joined the United Nations as as a founding member state. Israeli troops were withdrawn from Lebanon on May 24, 2000 and Syrian troops followed suit on April 30, 2005.
Michel Suleiman, 67, assumed office as the 12th president of Lebanon on May 25, 2008. When his term ended on May 25, 2014, there was no internal or foreign consensus on who would be elected as the republic’s next president.
