Eminem‘s song “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” was released on September 17, 2002. It is known for its opening, in which the rapper says, “Where’s my snare? There’s no snare in my headphones.”

Recently, Eminem revealed the truth behind the infamous ad-lib. In the lyric annotation of the song on Genius, Eminem wrote, “This was true.”

“I was recording and couldn’t hear the snare,” Eminem continued. “The engineer had it muted for some reason. I kept it.”

In the lyrics of the song, Eminem shares how he hated the way his mother Debbie Mathers raised him. He apologizes to her for hurting her and making her cry but he sarcastically takes it back.
