Representing Ukraine, “1944” won the 61st edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. The song was composed and recorded by Susana Alimivna Jamaladinova, who is professionally known as Jamala.
This marks the first time a song with Crimean Tatar lyrics won the contest. The song is about the discriminatory persecution of the Crimean Tatars in the context of the rule of Joseph Stalin over the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was established in 1922 and dissolved in 1991.
