Vigan

Vigan is the capital of Ilocos Sur, one of the four provinces of the Ilocos Region of the Philippines. The province has 32 municipalities and two component cities, which are Candon and Vigan.

Led by Juan de Salcedo, a group of around 80 soldiers arrived in Vigan on June 13, 1572. It is one of the first places in the Philippines invaded by Japan on December 10, 1941 at the start of World War II.

Born in Vigan, Elpidio Rivera Quirino served as the sixth president of the Philippines from April 17, 1948 to December 30, 1953. He turned 65 on November 16, 1955 and died in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines on February 29, 1956.

In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed Vigan as the best preserved example of Spanish colonial towns in Asia. On January 22, 2001, Vigan officially became a city.

In May 2015, Vigan was recognized as one of the New 7 Wonders Cities. The city has five international sister cities, which are Agadir, Morocco; Funchal, Madeira, Portugal; Honolulu, Hawaii, United States; Malacca City, Malaysia and Mar del Plata, Argentina.
