The Republic of Maldives is a country in South Asia. Situated in the Indian Ocean, the country lies southwest of India and Sri Lanka.

The Maldives gained its independence from the United Kingdom on July 26, 1965 and was admitted to the United Nations on September 21, 1965. On November 11, 1968, Maldives became a republic.

Abdulla Yameen, 57, is the incumbent president of the Maldives. He assumed office on November 17, 2013.
