In 2009, Brillante Mendoza became the first Filipino filmmaker to win the Best Director award at Cannes Film Festival. Eight years later, he was the only Filipino invited to the 70th anniversary photo call of the prestigious film festival on May 23 in France.
“I would’ve wanted everyone I work with to join me there,” Inquirer quoted Mendoza as saying. “They should also be honored, not just me. I am only a filmmaker, but the real creator is my mentor Armando ‘Bing’ Lao. I wanted him to be there, so he could experience the same thing standing alongside past winners and jury presidents.”
Lao wrote “Kinatay,” which earned Mendoza his Cannes Film Festival Best Director award. Also, Lao was the creative consultant of Mendoza’s other Cannes Film Festival films namely “The Masseur,” “Thy Womb” and “Ma’ Rosa.”
Mendoza’s fellow Asians at the 70th Cannes Film Festival anniversary photo were “X-Men: Days of Future Past” star Fan Bingbing and “Oldboy” director Park Chan Wook. The Filipino filmmaker found it overwhelming to pose side by side in a group photo with Hollywood stars including Will Smith, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Uma Thurman.
During the event, Thurman wore a knee-length white shirt dress paired with a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses, a wide waist belt, a red necklace and embellished flat sandals, Daily Mail reported. The “Kill Bill” star is set to star in the comedy film “The Brits are Coming” with Maggie Q, Alice Eve and Crispin Glover.
As for Smith, he is set to reprise his role as Mike Lowrey in the upcoming sequels of “Bad Boys.” Kidman is currently filming “Aquaman,” in which she plays Queen Atlanna, and is set to star in the western drama film “The Beguiled” with Dunst, Elle Fanning, Colin Farrell, Angourie Rice and Oona Laurence, among others.
Fanning was also present at the 70th Cannes Film Festival anniversary photo call. Other actors present during the event were Jessica Chastain, Diane Kruger, Charlize Theron, Salma Hayek, Benicio del Toro, Monica Bellucci, Juliette Binoche, Mads Mikkelsen, Christoph Waltz, Sofia Coppola, Roman Polanski, Sandrine Kiberlain, Reda Kateb, Agnes Jaoui, Maiween, Nastassja Kinski, Lambert Wilson, Jean-Pierre Leaud, Berenice Bejo, Emmanuelle Bercot, Emilie Dequenne, Elodie Bouchez, Vincent Lindon, Catherine Deneuve, Liv Ullmann, Claudia Cardinale and Andrea Arnold and Isabelle Huppert.
In 2012, Huppert starred in Mendoza’s “Captive.” Her co-actors in the film included “Ma’ Rosa” stars Mon Confiado, Baron Geisler, Kristoffer King, Neil Ryan Sese, Vince Rillon and Allan Paule, “Kinatay” star Maria Isabel Lopez and “The Masseur” stars Coco Martin and Mercedes Cabral.
