The 2017 Black Entertainment Awards started with Bruno Mars’ performance of his song “Perm” at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California, United States on June 25, 2017. The song was from his third studio album titled “24K Magic,” which was released in 2016.
Mars was up for five nominations at the 2017 BET Awards. He won two, which are Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the Year with “24K Magic,” which tied with Beyonce’s “Sorry.”
Beyonce beat Mars in his three other nominations. Mars’ “24K Magic” lost to “Sorry” in the Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award category and to “Lemonade” in the Album of the Year category.
“Sorry” was one of the 12 songs from “Lemonade,” which is Beyonce’s sixth studio album. She co-directed the music video of the song with Kahlil Joseph.
For directing the “Sorry” music video, Beyonce and Joseph won the Video Director of the Year award. Among the nominees they defeated were Mars and Jonathan Lia, who co-directed the music video of “That’s What I Like.”
This makes Beyonce the artist with most awards at the 2017 BET Awards. Unlike Mars, she did not perform during the event.
Among the other performers during the awarding ceremony were Mary J. Blige, Migos, Tamar Braxton, Chris Brown, Rihanna, French Montana, Big Sean, DJ Khaled, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber. Among the presenters were Jamie Foxx, Trevor Noah, Remy Ma and Issa Rae.
The 2017 BET Awards was in time for Mars’ break from his concert tour “24K Magic World Tour.” He will resume the tour on July 15, 2017 and will be joined by Camila Cabello from July 22, 2017 to August 22, 2017.
In September 2017, Mars will headline Music Midtown 2017, the largest music festival in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Joining him in the lineup are Wiz Khalifa, Tove Lo, Blink-182, Mumford & Sons and Future.
There is still no news about the release of Mars’ fourth studio albums. His first and second albums “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” and “Unorthodox Jukebox” were released in 2010 and 2012, respectively.
