Brillante Mendoza has been rubbing elbows with Hollywood stars recently. The Filipino filmmakers joined the Cannes Film Festival’s 70th anniversary photocall in May, and after a month, he was invited to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Class of 2017.
On May 23, Mendoza was among the 115 prizewinners and jury members of Cannes Film Festival who joined the 70th anniversary photocall of the prestigious film festival. As the only Filipino in the photo, he represented “Kinatay,” which made him the first and still the only Filipino to win Best Director from the film festival.
Among the Hollywood stars were in the photocall were Will Smith, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Kirsten Dunst, Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Salma Hayek, Tilda Swinton, Elle Fanning and Isabelle Huppert. After the photocall, Huppert joined Thierry Fremauz as hosts of a dinner party as part of Cannes Film Festival’s 70th anniversary celebration, Indie Wire reported.
In 2012, Huppert starred in Mendoza’s film “Captive,” which was screened at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival.
A month after the Cannes Film Festival’s 70th anniversary, AMPAS announced that it has 774 new members, which include Mendoza. He is one of the only two Filipino new members with Lav Diaz being the other one.
Having turned 19 on April 9, Fanning is the youngest member of the Academy Class of 2017. The oldest one is Betty White, who will turn 96 on Jan. 17, 2018.
Fanning and White were just two of the many Hollywood actors recently included in the Academy Class of 2017. Among the others are Gal Gadot, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, who are known for their respective roles in superhero films.
Gadot will reprise her role as Wonder Woman in “Justice League” and “Justice League Part Two.” Hemsworth and Evans will reprise their respective roles as Thor and Captain America in “Avengers: Infinity War,” which is currently being filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, Atlanta Magazine reported.
“Avengers: Infinity War” is being directed by Anthony Russo and Joe Russo. Also in the cast is Filipino-American wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista, who is reprising his role as Drax.
