Retired and active NBA players took to Twitter to react to the result of the recently concluded “Battle of Brisbane,” which made Jeff Horn the new WBO welterweight champion. The basketball stars appear to be unanimous when it comes to defending the boxing legend, who also has played as a professional basketball player in the Philippines.
Instead of ranting about Pacquiao’s loss, Kobe Bryant, 38, tweeted a GIF of O’Shea Jackson, 48, who is professionally known as Ice Cube. The look of shock and confusion in Ice Cube’s face imply that Bryant disagrees with the judges’ unanimous decision in favor of Horn.
“Boxing is wack!!!!” Chauncey Billups, 40, also tweeted. He added that Pacquiao was robbed again.
Like other Pacquiao’s supporters, Billups was implying that the Filipino boxer was already robbed by Timothy Bradley Jr. in 2012. Billups added that boxing results like that in the “Battle of Brisbane” bout are why “MMA is so big now.”
Both Bryant and Billups are retired NBA players. The former played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1996 to 2016 while the latter played for the Boston Celtics, the Toronto Raptors, the Denver Nuggets, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Detroit Pistons, the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Clippers.
Miami Heat player Dion Waiters, 25, shares the same sentiments with Billups. Waiters simply tweeted that Pacquiao was robbed.
Minnesota Timberwolves player Karl-Anthony Towns, 2,1 tweeted that the Filipino fighter was disrespected like he was not a legend. Toronto Raptors player DeMar DeRozan also tweeted, “The Sun must’ve been in the judges face.”
Like DeRozan, Denver Nuggets player Mike Miller, 37, questioned the judges’ decision. Miller tweeted, “So the ref almost stops fight in round 9. Pacquiao lands 32% of his punches to Horn’s 15% but somehow Horn gets the unanimous decision?”
