It has always been Kiko Matos’s dream to work with Brillante Mendoza. After years of waiting for this dream to be realized, the actor-MMA fighter finally played a character in a project directed by the 2009 Cannes Film Festival Best Director.

Mendoza recently directed a TV series titled “AMO.” Matos is one of the guest actors in the upcoming TV series along with Baron Geisler, Angela Cortez, Alvin Anson, Mark Dionisio, Neil Perez and Willy Quinto.

In an interview, Matos told me that he had been waiting for the chance to work with Mendoza for years. According to the actor, he has met the director several times but the acting in a project directed by the award-winning filmmaker never happened to the actor until “AMO.”

Before “AMO,” Matos also worked with Nora Aunor for the first time. The latter starred in two films by Mendoza namely “Thy Womb,” which competed for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival, and “Taklub,” which was screened in the Un Certain Regard at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

Matos revealed that he and Geisler did not meet on the set of “AMO.” The two actors made headlines in 2016 when they fought in an MMA bout under Universal Reality Combat Champion (URCC) and participated in “Beastmode,” a documentary which has yet to be released.

Troy Espiritu wrote “AMO,” which is set on the background of War On Drugs by the Philippine government. In 2016, he wrote the screenplay of Mendoza’s 2016 Cannes Film Festival entry “Ma’ Rosa.”

“AMO” will premiere on TV5 on Sept. 20. It stars Derek Ramsay, Felix Roco, Vince Rillon, Allen Dizon, Apollo Abraham, Ruby Ruiz and Dexter Macaraeg as Rodrigo Macaraeg, Bino, Joseph, Camilo, Abner, Myrna and Enteng, respectively, along with JC Tan, Aldrico Padilla, Nikko Delos Santos, Elijah Filamor and Malak So as gangsters.

Meanwhile, the characters played by Matos and Geisler are still under wraps. Watch my interview with the former here:
