On Nov. 10, Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen made history as the first ONE Championship fighter to hold two titles at the same time. Just 12 days after stealing the Lightweight World Champion belt from Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, the Vietnamese-Australian took to Instagram to confirm that his next opponent is the reigning Bantamweight World Champion.
“LIKE AND SHARE GUYS!!!” Nguyen captioned a photo of him and Fernandes. “Huge bombshell I’ve been keeping quiet about. Cats out of the bag.”
Both Nguyen and Fernandes have accepted the offer to face each other in a superfight. The date and the venue of the match have yet to be confirmed.
For Nguyen, it is time to make history again. He feels honored for the opportunity to share the ONE Championship cage with one of the best bantamweight fighters in the world.
Fernandes is reigning UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson’s main sparring partner. The first fighter to defeat the Brazilian fighter was retired MMA fighter Urijah Faber, who enjoyed a career as a UFC fighter before his retirement.
Right after losing to Faber, Fernandes lost to Norifumi Yamamoto via unanimous decision. The third and most recent loss of the reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion was via unanimous decision in favor of Hiroyuki Takaya.
The most recent fight Fernandes had was at “ONE: Kings and Conquerors” in Macau, China, where he defeated Andrew Leone by rear-naked choke submission at 1:47 of Round 1. Currently, Fernandes holds a record of 21 wins and 3 losses.
On the other hand, Nguyen currently holds a record of 10 wins and 1 loss. The only fighter to defeat him was former ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat Gafurov.
On Aug. 18, Nguyen and Gafurov had a rematch at “ONE: Quest for Greatness,” which gave the former a redemptive win. Nguyen defeated both Gafurov and Folayang via knockout in Round 2 of 5.
Before becoming a ONE Championship fighter, Nguyen was an undefeated fighter with 3 wins. He defeated Richard Kemp-Hay, Thomas Ruderman and Luke Standing at “Southern Fight Promotions: Cage Conquest 1,” “BFW 18: Canberra” and “BFW 24: Brace for War 24,” respectively.
On Nov. 7, 2014, Nguyen made a successful ONE Championship debut by defeating the late Filipino fighter Rocky Batolbatol via rear-naked choke submission in Round 2. The other fighters Nguyen defeated were Edward Kelly, Li Kai Wen, Christian Lee and Kazunori Yokota.
Here is a short interview I had with Nguyen prior to his win over Folayang in the Philippines:
