Shinya “Tobikan Jodan” Aoki, 34, will attempt to become the new ONE Welterweight World Champion at “ONE: Immortal Pursuit” on Nov. 24, Friday, at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. For the Japanese veteran fighter to achieve this goal, he has to defeat the reigning champion, Ben “Funky” Askren, 33.
Askren is an undefeated fighter with 17 wins and 1 No Contest. He made his debut as a professional MMA fighter on Feb. 7, 2009 at “HP: The Patriot Act” in Colombia, where defeated Josh Flowers via technical knockout via punches at 1:25 of Round 1.
On May 30, 2014, Askren made his ONE Championship debut at “ONE FC 16: Honor and Glory” in Kallang. He defeated Bakhtiyar Abbasov via arm-triangle choke submission at 4:21 of Round 1.
In Askren’s most recent fight, he defeated Zebaztian Kadestam. The latter lost via technical knockout via punches at 4:09 in Round 2 at “ONE Championship: Shanghai” on Sept. 2 in Shanghai, China.
On the other hand, Aoki’s most recent fight was at “ONE Championship: Dynasty of Heroes” on May 26 in Kallang. He lost to Garry Tonon in a grappling bout.
Before losing to Tonon, Aoki lost to former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 24, via technical knockout via punches at 0:41 of Round 3. Their match was the main event of “ONE Championship: Defending Honor” in Kallang on Nov. 11, 2016.
Currently, Aoki has a record of 39 wins and 7 losses. Except Folayang, the Japanese fighters defeated all his ONE Championship opponents namely Arnaud Lepont, Antonio McKee, Koketsu Boku, Cody Stevens, Toshikatsu Harada, Kamal Shalorus, Yuki Yamamoto, Koji Ando and Kazushi Sakuraba.
