(UPDATED: April 16, 2018)
While most Team Lakay fighters had two fights in 2017, Honorio “The Rock” Banario, 28, only had one. His only bout in 2017 was a win over Jaroslav Jartiv, 25, at “ONE: Kings of Destiny” on April 21, 2017 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
I interviewed Banario during a Team Lakay event on May 1, 2017 in Kapangan, Benguet and asked him who he wanted to fight next. He said he wanted to “settle things” with Ev “E.T.” Ting, 28, a Malaysian fighter based in New Zealand.
Ting had his first professional MMA loss on February 11, 2012 when he was submitted via rear-naked choke by Mark “Mugen” Striegl, 29, a Filipino-American fighter based in Baguio City, the home city of Team Lakay. After this, Ting went on to defeat his next Filipino opponents.
On October 17, 2014, Ting knocked out Team Lakay fighter Edward “The Ferocious” Kelly, 33, at “ONE: Roar of Tigers” at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. On March 13, 2015, the Malaysian fighter won again at the same venue at “ONE: Age of Champions” after submitting Cary “The Prince” Bullos, 34, who is from Lapu-Lapu, Cebu.
Home court advantage worked in Ting’s favor as he won again at the Putra Indoor Stadium on October 9, 2015 by submitting Banario at “ONE: Tigers of Asia.” On January 29, 2018, the Malaysian fighter won at “ONE: Clash of Heroes” by submitting yet another Filipino opponent, Eric “The Natural” Kelly, 35, brother of Edward.
But on April 21, 2017, former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 34, defeated Ting via unanimous decision. If a rematch between Ting and Banario does not happen soon, one between Ting and Folayang will be as interesting.
On April 20, 2018, Banario is returning to the cage as he takes on Adrian “The Hunter” Pang, 40, of Australia at “ONE: Heroes of Honor” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. If the Team Lakay fighter wins the bout, he will have better chances to have his rematch with Ting.
Meanwhile, Folayang is returning to the cage on May 18, 2018 at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. He will face undefeated Russian fighter Kharun “Predator” Atlangeriev, 25, who is making his promotional debut.
