The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a de facto state in Western Asia. The de facto state comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus.
Among the 193 members of the United Nations, only Turkey recognizes Northern Cyprus. The others either consider the de facto state as de jure part of Cyprus or prefer not to comment about the issue.
On November 15, 1983, Northern Cyprus declared its independence from the Republic of Cyprus. North Cyprus’s incumbent and fourth president Mustafa Akıncı, 70, assumed office on April 30, 2015.
