The Republic of Singapore is a sovereign island city-state in Southeast Asia. The country borders the South China Sea to the east, the Straits of Malacca to the west and the Riau Islands, Indonesia to the south.

On August 6, 1965, Singapore was expelled from Malaysia and became independent. Singapore’s first prime minister Lee Kuan Yew died on March 23, 2015.

Singapore’s incumbent and third prime minister Lee Hsien Loong, 65, assumed office on August 12, 2004. The country’s incumbent and eighth president Halimah Yacob, 63, assumed office on September 14, 2017.

A unitary parliamentary republic, Singapore is a member of the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, the East Asia Summit, the Non-Aligned Movement, the Commonwealth of Nations, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation.
