There are still no details about the cast of the upcoming “Spider-Man” spin-off “Silver and Black.” However, rumors are claiming that “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez is set to play a lead role.
Scheduled to be released on February 8, 2019, “Silver and Black” will be directed by “Beyond the Lights” writer and director Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Wrap has learned. She is said to have a friendly relationship with the upcoming action movie “Miss Bala,” which stars Rodriguez.
“Thor: Ragnarok” writer Christopher Yost co-wrote the screenplay of “Silver and Black” with Prince-Bythewood, according to Slash Report. The title of the “Spider-Man” spin-off refers to two of Spider-Man’s most prominent female sparring partners Silver Sable and Black Cat.
Silver Sable, which has never been introduced in a movie before “Silver and Black,” is a mercenary who runs a company that hunts criminals while Black Cat is a cat burglar’s daughter who became Spider-Man’s crime fighting ally. Rodriguez has yet to confirm if she is playing either of the two characters.
Rodriguez rose to fame when she started playing the title character in the comedy-drama series “Jane the Virgin” in 2014. The loose adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela “Juana de la Virgen” is currently on its fourth season on The CW.
On the big screen, Rodriguez played Andrea Fleytas in the 2016 action drama thriller “Deepwater Horizon” by Peter Berg. Among her co-stars were Joe Chrest, James DuMont, Douglas M. Griffin, Kurt Russell and Mark Wahlberg.
Rodriguez is also set to star in the adventure fantasy drama “Annihilation” by Alex Garland. Set to hit theaters on February 23, 2018, the film will also star Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Sonoya Mizuno, Benedict Wong, Vin Pryam and Oscar Isaac.
As a voice actress, Rodriguez voiced Una in “The Star” and Una in “Ferdinand” in 2017. She is currently filming “Smallfoot,” in which she will voice the character named Kolka. Here is a video featuring the “Jane the Virgin” star:
