Brandon “The Truth” Vera, 40, recently visited the Smokey Mountain area of Tondo, Manila, the largest slum area in the capital of the Philippines, with his fellow ONE Championship athletes Angela “Unstoppable” Lee, 21, and Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 33. The three MMA fighters have been selected as ambassadors of an international advocacy organization called Global Citizen.
ONE Championship has partnered with Global Citizen with a common goal to end extreme poverty by 2030. As part of the partnership, the organizations teamed up with a local non-government organization in the Philippines called Young Focus to conduct an outreach activity in Tondo with Vera, Lee and Folayang.
“Hanging out with the children was an awesome privilege,” Vera said. “It made me appreciate everything a lot more and has motivated me to give back even more when I can. If I am able to help these kids, it means the world to me.”
“I have been fortunate enough to be raised in an environment where I never had to face what these kids have to deal with on a daily basis,” the reigning ONE Heavyweight World Champion added. “If only to inspire them to work hard and study hard so they can chase their dreams, then I’m all for it.”
For Vera, hope is important because “even just a little bit of it goes a long way.” He was grateful to ONE Championship and Global Citizen for allowing him, Lee and Folayang to have the opportunity to inspire the underprivileged ones like the children they visited in Tondo.
ONE Championship and Global Citizen will collaborate across 24 live events of the former, which are scheduled in 2018, and various outreach activations throughout Asia. Fans will have the opportunity to take action and engage with specific policy areas including education, food security, hunger and nutrition, global health and gender equality and empowerment.
The partnership will harness the power of ONE Championship’s platform to engage millions of martial arts fans around the world to support initiatives and find solutions to the issues associated with extreme poverty. Have a glimpse of Vera, Lee and Folayang’s recent visit in Tondo here:
