“ONE: Global Superheroes” was the first 2018 event of ONE Championship in the Philippines. The first match of the evening was a riveting strawweight encounter as Adrian Mattheis, 24, of Indonesia squared off against the debuting Eddey “The Clown” Kalai, 35, of Malaysia.
Mattheis weathered a gutsy opening sequence from Eddey, who effortlessly pummeled the ONE Strawweight Indonesia Tournament Champion with his superb boxing. The complexion of the contest took a drastic turn when Mattheis gained leverage on the mat, catching Kalai with a rear naked choke to force the tap at 4:15 minutes of Round 1.
While Kalai was a ONE Championship debutante, Mattheis fought six fights under the promotion prior to “ONE: Global Superheroes.” The Indonesian dynamo made his promotional debut on August 26, 2016 at “ONE: Titles and Titans” preliminary fight night in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he knocked out Rustam Hutajulu at 0:22 of Round 1.
Following his successful promotional debut, Mattheis defeated his fellow Indonesian Roso Nugroho. Matheis then lost to Rene Catalan of the Philippines and Thai fighters Kritsada “Dream Man” Kongsrichai and Dejdamrong Sor “Kru Rong” Amnuaysirichoke, 39.
On September 16, 2017, Mattheis redeemed himself by submitting Phat Soda of Cambodia via rear-naked choke submission at 3:11 of Round 1 at “ONE: Total Victory.” After beating Kalai, Mattheis now has 4 wins and 3 losses.
Headlined by Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, 28, of the Philippines and Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov of Kazakhstan, “ONE: Global Superheroes” took place on January 26, 2018 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. After five three-minute rounds, Eustaquio won via unanimous decision making him the new ONE Interim Flyweight World Champion.
