The strawweight bout between Filipino fighters Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres, 21, of Catalan Fighting Systems and April Osenio, 23, of Team Lakay was the only fight between female contenders at the ONE Championship event “ONE: Global Superheroes” on January 26, 2018 in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. It was under the preliminary card and the third bout of the evening.
Torres scored the most impressive win of her young career as a mixed martial artist, authoring a swift knockout finish over Osenio. The former left a lasting impression in her third trip to the ONE Championship cage, driving the Team Lakay atomweight ace to the mat with a high-impact slam before putting the final touches with follow-up ground strikes to claim the knockout.
The crowd was impressed when Torres defeated Osenio by knockout at 0:40 minutes of Round 1. With her coach Rene Catalan as her interpreter, Torres told Mitch Chilson in a post-fight interview that she did not expect that the bout would end the way it did.
Still undefeated, Torres now has 4 wins and 0 loss after beating Osenio. On the other hand, Osenio’s record downgraded to 2 wins and 4 losses.
Osenio made her ONE Championship debut on March 13, 2015 at “ONE: Age of Champions” where she lost to Kirstie Gannaway via rear-naked choke submission. In 2016, Osenio bounced back by defeating Natalie Gonzales Hills at “ONE: Global Rivals” and Ann Osman at “ONE: Unbreakable Warriors.”
Since winning against Osman, Osenio has yet to win again. She lost to Jenny Huang at “ONE: Age of Domination” in December 2016 and to Xiong Jing Nan at “ONE: Warriors of the World” in December 2017.
Torres’s ONE Championship debut was a successful one. She submitted Rika Ishige via rear-naked choke on August 5, 2017 at “ONE: Kings and Conquerors.”
Before joining ONE Championship, Torres made her professional MMA debut at “URCC: Dutdutan ‘16” where she defeated Krisna Lindaga. Before defeating Osenio, Torres won at “ONE: Hero’s Dream” via unanimous decision against Nita Dea.
