ONE Championship is launching of a new global super league called ONE Super Series, the promotion’s CEO Chatri Sityodtong has announced. World champions from all major disciplines of stand-up arts will be invited to compete in the new league.
The first ring event of ONE Super Series will take place on April 20, 2018 at “ONE: Heroes of Honor,” which will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. It will be half mixed martial arts and half striking, according to Sityodtong.
“You’ll see the initial glimpse of what ONE Super Series is all about, but we envision ONE Super Series as a standalone event,” Sityodtong stated. “This year we plan to do 24 events, but next year we plan to do 36 events and so a big portion of those 36 events will be ONE Super Series standalone events in a ring, or in a cage, depending on the athletes competing.”
“That’s the flexibility we’re offering,” Sityodtong continued. “Again, it’s a wider platform of martial arts, making it the largest platform of martial arts in the world. This is what ONE Championship is all about as the home of martial arts.”
Among the world champions expected to compete at “ONE: Heroes of Honor” under ONE Super Series are Giorgio Petroysan, 32, and Jo Nattawut, 25. The former is an Armenian-Italian kickboxer while the latter is a Thai Muay Thai fighter currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, United States.
“We’re already in discussion with a lot of stand-up strikers,” Sityodtong said. “And we should be making some big announcements in the coming weeks.”
Details about the MMA fighters in the “ONE: Heroes of Honor” fight card have yet to be announced. Meanwhile, here is a short interview with Sityodtong at the “ONE: Global Superheroes” press conference at the City of Dreams in Parañaque City, Metro Manila on January 22, 2018:
