The undefeated record of Agilan “Alligator” Thani, 22, of Malaysia was broken by ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben “Funky” Askren, 33, of the United States in 2017. Before 2017 ended, the Malaysian fighter redeemed himself by defeating Sherif “The Shark” Mohamed, 35, of Egypt.
On March 9, 2018, Thani will return to the ONE Championship cage at Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He will face promotional newcomer Amitesh Chaubey, 27, of India on the undercard of “ONE: Visions of Victory.”
“It feels great to be competing again in front of my country men,” Thani stated. “Every time I step outside the curtains and walk towards the cage, I feel the energy from the home crowd. Every roar from my countrymen gives me the adrenaline that I need for my match. It brings out the best in me.”
Chaubey is a boxer who has also displayed some grappling expertise in the past as he has a few submission victories to his name. He is an SFL Welterweight Champion who is known as an aggressive knockout artist.
“I watched a couple of his bouts, and he has a very big overhand right,” Thani said of Chaubey. “He is a very naturally strong guy. I will not underestimate him. He is a very good, quality opponent, and I am just hopeful to put on a show for everyone and show my best against him.”
Meanwhile, Askren decided to call it a day after successfully defending the belt against Shinya Aoki in November 2017. With this, Thani is training harder than ever to show he deserves another chance at the belt.
“I am training all aspects of the game to achieve my goal to win against my opponent and be one step closer to getting back to a world title shot,” Thani declared. “I am not treating this match lightly.”
