“Cannon” Ma Jia Wen of China fought his seventh ONE Championship bout on March 9, 2018 at “ONE: Visions of Victory” at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Chinese mixed martial artist submitted Ahmed “The Wolverine” Mujtaba of Pakistan via rear-naked choke at 2:38 of Round 2.
Ma showcased incredible grit and toughness as he overcame a furious start from Mujtaba to win by submission. The Pakistani MMA fighter stormed out of the gates, immediately scoring a takedown and then positioning himself on top to pummel his Chinese opponent with ground strikes.
However, Ma was able to return to his feet and towards the end of the round. He landed a beautiful left hook to the chin that sent Mujtaba crashing to the canvas.
By the start of the second frame, Mujtaba appeared exhausted, prompting Ma to capitalize on the opportunity. The Chinese contender’s ground-and-pound and positional control gave him the perfect opening to fasten a bout-ending choke to earn the victory.
This is the fifth time Ma won a bout under the promotion. He made his ONE Championship debut on June 20, 2015 at “ONE: Dynasty of Champions 2” where he lost to Di Yuan Huang via unanimous decision after knocking out Biekemulati Nulijiao via punches at 2:06 of Round 2.
On November 21, 2015, Ma defeated Wang Ya Fei via unanimous decision at “ONE: Dynasty of Champions 4.” On May 6, 2016, Ma was knocked out by Saygid Guseyn Arslanaliev at “ONE: Ascent to Power” via punches at 1:57 of Round 1.
On August 13, 2016, Ma knocked out Jimmy Yabo via elbows at “ONE: Heroes of the World.” On March 11, 2017, Ma knocked out Yohan Mulia Legowo via punches at “ONE: Warrior Kingdom.”
On the other hand, Mujtaba made his promotional debut on November 11, 2016 at “ONE: Defending Honor.” He defeated Benedict Ang via unanimous decision.
On February 10, 2017, Mujtaba returned to the ONE Championship cage facing Keanu Subba of Malaysia at “ONE: Throne of Tigers.” The Pakistani fighter had his first loss as a professional MMA fighter after being submitted by his Malaysian opponent via guillotine choke at 2:56 of Round 1.
On November 24, 2017, Mujtaba redeemed himself at “ONE: Immortal Pursuit.” He won after his Chinese opponent Li Kai Wen was disqualified due to punches to the back of the head in the first round.
After losing to Ma, Mujtaba now has 7 wins and 2 losses. The win improved Ma’s professional MMA record to 5 wins and 2 losses.
