Ex-heavyweight champs battle: Fabricio Werdum vs Alexander Volkov at ‘UFC Fight Night 127’

The main event of “UFC Fight Night 127” will be a battle between two former heavyweight champions. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum, 40, of Los Angeles, California, will face former Bellator Heavyweight Champion Alexander “Drago” Volkov, 29, of Moscow, Russia.

Werdum was born in Porto Alegre, Brazil where he started his Brazilian jiu-jitsu training. When he made his UFC debut at “UFC 70: Nations Collide” on April 21, 2007, he lost to Andrei Arlovski, 39, of Belarus via unanimous decision.

On October 25, 2008, Werdum lost to his fellow Brazilian fighter Junior dos Santos, 34, ia knockout. Subsequently, the UFC terminated its contract with the former.

But on November 8, 2011, the UFC re-signed Werdum. On February 4, 2012, he defeated Roy “Big Country” Nelson, 41, of Nevada, USA at “UFC 143” via unanimous decision.

On November 15, 2014, Werdum became the interim UFC Heavyweight Champion when he knocked out Mark “Super Samoan” Hunt, 43, of New Zealand in the second round.

On May 14, 2016, Werdum was dethroned by Stipe Miocic, 35, of Ohio, USA at “UFC 198.” Currently, the former has 23 wins, 7 losses and 1 draw.

On the other hand, Volkov currently has 29 wins and 6 losses. He became the Bellator Heavyweight Champion on December 14, 2012 when he defeated Richard “Rare Breed” Hale, 32, of Ohio via unanimous decision.

On November 15, 2013, Volkov defended his title for the first time. He was dethroned by  Vitaly Minakov, 33, of Bryansk, Russia at “Bellator 108” via a first-round technical knockout.

Volkov signed with the UFC in September 2016. He has fought three bouts in the promotion, winning them all.
