When reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela Lee and Mei Yamaguchi fought at “ONE: Ascent to Power” on May 6, 2016, they were both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belts. On May 18, 2018, they are both entering the ONE Championship cage in Singapore at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” as BJJ black belts.
During the worldwide media conference call for “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” on March 15, 2018, the reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion said it was a great honor to receive her black belt in jiu-jitsu alongside her Christian Lee, who is also a ONE Championship athlete. She said, “We’ve both been training very, very hard.”
“Since young age, we’ve been dedicated to this, not just jiu-jitsu but martial arts as a whole,” Angela added. “It’s been part of our lifestyle and I think it’s very significant to receive the black belt and especially now at this time. It’s really motivating to me because this is the start of a whole new chapter so it pushes me to train even harder.”
ONE Championship Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong has nothing but praises for Angela and Yamaguchi. He described Angela as a rare breed of martial artist and Yamaguchi as “a complete, complete martial artist” who has “so much talent.”
“Her ground game is insane,” Sityodtong said of Yamaguchi. “Her striking is obviously world class.”
The main event of “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” is going to be a war, Sityodtong said. He added, “It’s going to be a big, big test for both Mei and for Angela especially since what happened a couple years ago in their last fight.”
“This is going to be a big test for both of them to see how far they’ve come,” Sityodtong emphasized. “But I think both of them are world class and super talented and gifted.”
“ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” will take place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. Meanwhile, here is a clip featuring the champions of ONE Championship:
