ONE Featherweight and Lightweight World Champion Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen, 29, recently congratulated ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, 38. The two-division world champion challenged the longest-reigning ONE Championship champion on March 24, 2018 at “ONE: Iron Will” at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
On April 1, 2018, Nguyen took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with two of his three children. In the caption, he wrote a lengthy message about his most recent about and congratulated the Brazilian champion over his recent win.
“Congrats to Mr Bibiano, you’ve shown the world why you’re the current champion and your championship experience came into play in that dying 5th round,” Nguyen wrote. The Vietnamese-Australian mixed martial artist also thanked his wife Brooke Nguyen and their three children for “showing their undying support.”
In addition, Martin thanked his coaches Fari Salievski, Chrysler de Castro and Brian Ebersole for sharing their “irreplaceable knowledge” as well as ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong for giving him a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The first ever two-division world champion of the promotion also did not forget to thank his team KMA Top Team and his sponsors Bad Boy Brands, Muscle Meals Direct, Austral New Age Physiotherapy, Century Tuna, Saigon Sports Club, Fighters Against Child Abuse Australia (FACAA) and 6 Degrees Group.
“There is no I in team and this was sure as hell a team effort,” Martin ended his message. Born in Australia to Vietnamese immigrants, he represents both Australia and Vietnam.
Martin and Fernandes failed to either submit or knock out each other at “ONE: Iron Will.” After five five-minute rounds, the judges gave a split decision in favor of the reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion.
This made Fernandes the ONE Championship champion with the most successful defenses with six followed by ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben “Funky” Askren, 33, with three. Meanwhile, watch a recap of “ONE: Iron Will” here:
