Originally, 13 bouts were scheduled for “UFC 223” on April 7, 2018 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. But due to the incident involving Conor McGregor, three of the 13 bouts have been cancelled.
On April 4, 2018, UFC President Dana White confirmed that McGregor will be stripped of his UFC Lightweight Champion title. The title will be given to the winner of the bout between Khabib Nurmagomedov and reigning UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway, who will headline “UFC 223” at Barclays Center.
On April 5, 2018, McGregor and his crew made a surprise appearance at Barclays Center. They attacked the bus carrying Nurmagomedov, reigning UFC Women’s Strawweight Rose Namajunas, Al Iaquinta, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Ray Borg and Michael Chiesa.
McGregor broke the window glass of the bus. Shards of glass injured Borg’s eyes and Chiesa’s forehead so they both had to pull out of the competition.
Borg was supposed to fight Brandon Moreno in the flyweight division while Chiesa was set to compete in the lightweight division against Anthony Pettis. Aside from these two bouts, the scheduled featherweight bout between Artem Lobov and Alex Caceres at “UFC 223” has also been cancelled.
It was later revealed that Lobov was part of McGregor’s team who attacked the bus and consequently injured Borg and Chiesa. The UFC will not look for replacements for Lobov, Borg and Chiesa in a very short notice.
This leaves 10 bouts on the “UFC 223” fight card. The first bout will be a light heavyweight bout between Devin Clark and Mike Rodriguez followed by a lightweight bout between Evan Dunham and Olivier Aubun-Mercier.
The third bout will be a women’s flyweight bout between Bec Rawlings and Ashlee Evans-Smith followed by a lightweight bout between Joe Lauzon and Chris Gruetzemacher. The fifth bout and the last bout on the preliminary card is a women’s strawweight bout between Kowalkiewicz and Felice Herrig.
Kicking off the main card, Iaquinta will compete against Paul Felder in the lightweight division. This will be followed by featherweight bouts between Zabit Magomedsharipov and Kyle Bochniak and between Renato Moicano and Calvin Kattar.
In the co-main event, Namajunas will defend her title from Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Watch the “UFC 223” pre-fight press conference here:
