On January 23, 2016, Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon of Team Lakay from Baguio City, Philippines failed to dethrone reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes of Brazil. After the loss, the Team Lakay fighter established a five-fight winning streak beating Muin Gafurov, Toni Tauru, Reece McLaren, Kevin Chung and most recently, Andrew Leone.
“I’ve improved a lot since the first bout,” Belingon said of the bout against Fernandes. “I can’t wait to show the champion how much I’ve changed and what I’ve become. He inspired me to become the martial artist I am today.”
“Because of him, I realized what was missing in my game,” Belingon said of Fernandes. “I knew in order to have a chance at success, I had to improve my takedown defense and grappling. With the help of my teammates and my coach, I’m at a great spot in my career now. I feel so confident in my striking, more than ever before.”
Like most, if not all, mixed martial artists, Belingon aims to become the next champion, but whether or not it is Fernandes, the Team Lakay fighter is ready to face any opponent. Belingon stated, “Whatever happens, I welcome any challenger. It doesn’t matter to me. It’s not my place to make matchups.”
“I am a fighter, ”the Team Lakay fighter continued. “I get in there and do my thing, that’s what I’m concerned about. I just want to test myself against the very best in this sport, but if the champion is next, I will be ready.”
Currently, Belingon has 18 wins and 5 losses. Watch the bout between him and Leone at “ONE: Heroes of Honor” on April 20, 2018 at “ONE: Heroes of Honor” at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines here:
