Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa of Brazil and Spain has made history at the 2018 Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Super Cup. The Brazilian-Spanish footballer scored the fastest goal in the history of the annual football match contested by the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
The 2018 UEFA Super Cup is the 43rd edition of the annual football match. The match was between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, the respective winners of the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League in the 2017-2018 season.
Located in Tallinn, Estonia, the A Le Coq Arena played host to the match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid on August 15, 2018. The match was just 49 seconds old when Costa struck and made a record-breaking goal for Atletico Madrid, giving the team an early lead.
The previous record was held by Sevilla Futbol Club midfielder Ever Banega, 30. Through a third-minute free kick, he scored a goal in the 2015 UEFA Super Cup for Sevilla, which eventually lost to Futbol Club Barcelona.
Costa was born in Lagarto, Sergipe, Brazil. His father Jose de Jesus named him after Argentine footballer Diego Maradona, 57, despite the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina.
In 2013, Costa played twice internationally for Brazil and in the same year, he was granted Spanish citizenship. He represented Spain at the 2014 and 2018 editions of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup.
