Team Lakay is composed of mostly white belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Despite this, the world-class mixed martial arts team based in Baguio City, Philippines has built a system that has a practical and effective use when it comes to MMA, according to former ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 34.

“We focus on No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu and its practical uses in mixed martial arts,” Folayang explained. “The American approach to grappling is a bit different.”

“It is about going to a dominant position and not forcing to secure a submission,” the former ONE Lightweight World Champion added. “What I learned is to get to a dominant position and then score from there.”

Team Lakay fighters are known as great strikers and fight critics often point out that their ground game is their Achilles heel. On the other hand, Folayang pointed out that the Wushu background of the team helps when it comes to grappling.

“I think we have a good grappling base in Wushu,” Folayang said. “That is a huge factor because in Wushu, you do takedowns with a pair of gloves. Another factor is we now have the confidence that even if we go to the ground, we do not worry about getting easily submitted.”

Recently, Folayang spent a month to sharpen his fight skills at Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States. The training facility’s headmasters Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn got it covered for the Team Lakay fighter from striking to grappling.

After defeating two previously undefeated Dagestani fighters, Folayang gave no room for complacency. He and his Team Lakay comrades continue to train hard.

On October 22, 2018, Folayang spent the day training at the Baguio Athletic Bowl in Baguio City with several Team Lakay fighters who are currently signed with ONE Championship. Among them were ONE Flyweight World Champion Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio, 29, ONE Strawweight World Champion Joshua “Passion” Pacio, 22, ONE Interim Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, 30, former ONE Featherweight World Champion Honorio “The Rock” Banario, 28, and Danny “The King” Kingad, 23.

On November 23, 2018, Folayang will compete for the recently vacated ONE Lightweight World Championship title against Amir Khan, 23, of Singapore. Meanwhile, here is a throwback to an interview with the Team Lakay fighter when he was still a reigning world champion:
