On November 22, 2018, Filipino mixed martial arts superfighter Eduard “Landslide” Folayang will turn 35. One day after his 35th birthday, the fighter from Team Lakay of Baguio City, Philippines will make an attempt to redeem the ONE Lightweight World Championship belt.
On November 23, 2018, Folayang and Amir Khan, 23, Singapore will headline “ONE: Conquest of Champions” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. They will compete for the ONE Lightweight World Championship title, which was recently vacated by Martin “The Situ-Asian: Nguyen, 29, of Australia and Vietnam, who is still the reigning ONE Featherweight World Champion.
For Folayang, a former ONE Lightweight World Champion, there is no better present for himself than to have a world title wrapped around his waist once again. The Team Lakay fighter said, “There’s no greater gift I can receive on my 35th birthday other than winning the ONE Lightweight Word Title back and there’s no better place to do it but in front of my countrymen.”
On November 10, 2017, Folayang relinquished the title to Nguyen in the same venue. After the loss, the Filipino superfighter did not waste any time as he immediately went back to the drawing board to check where things went wrong.
Folayang worked his way back to the upper echelon of the talent-filled 77.1-kilogram weight class, dominating two previously undefeated fighters from Dagestan, Russia. The Team Lakay fighter defeated Kharun “Predator” Atlangeriev, 26, at “ONE: Unstoppable Dreams” on May 18, 2018 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore and Aziz Pahrudinov, 29, on July 27, 2018 at “ONE: Reign of Kings” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.
The opportunity of reclaiming the ONE Lightweight World Championship is both as a reward and vindication for Folayang. Currently, he holds a professional MMA record of 20 wins and 6 losses.
“There were some who doubted my decision to continue fighting after the knockout loss to Martin Nguyen nearly a year ago,” Folayang explained. “After two wins in ONE Championship, I am back in the title picture.”
