Mei Yamaguchi vs Jomary Torres at ‘ONE: Destiny of Champions’ in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

ONE Championship will hold “ONE: Destiny of Champions” at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on December 7, 2018. One of the most exciting mixed martial arts matches on the card is a women’s strawweight bout between Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi of Tokyo, Japan and Jomary “The Zamboanganian Fighter” Torres of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines.

Born in Tokyo, Yamaguchi started learning karate at the age of six because she wanted to be like action star Jackie Chan. She went to school in Los Angeles, California, United States.

Growing up, Yamaguchi divided her time between Japan and the U.S. After moving back to Japan, she made her professional martial arts debut in 2007, and two years later she won a four-woman tournament to become the Valkyrie Featherweight Champion.

In 2015, Yamaguchi claimed the second championship of her veteran career, beating three tough opponents to win the DEEP Jewels Featherweight Grand Prix and the belt. After a storied career, she finally made her way to ONE Championship.

Compared to Yamaguchi, Torres is a new MMA fighter. The Zamboanga del Norte native is riding a wave of momentum, having railed off four straight wins to start off her career, including three inside the ONE Championship cage.

Torres’s latest outing resulted in a minor setback but she is determined to reestablish herself as one of the top competitors in the women’s atomweight division. Currently, she is sharpening her skills under the watchful eye of famed Wushu World Champion Rene “The Challenger” Catalan, a ONE Championship veteran.

In the main event of “ONE: Destiny of Champions,” Yodsanklai “The Hero” IWE Fairtex, 32, of Thailand will face Luis “Macaco” Regis, 33, of Australia. They will compete in a ONE Super Series Muay Thai contest.
