Venezuela is still one of the strongest countries in Miss Universe. On December 17, 2018, Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez was second runner-up in the 67th edition of the beauty pageant.
Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa crowned Catriona Gray of the Philippines as Miss Universe 2018 at the IMPACT Arena, Exhibition and Convention Center in Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand. Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green was first runner-up.
The Miss Universe 2018 coronation night was hosted by Steve Harvey along with Ashley Graham, Carson Kressley and Lu Sierra. Shaffer Chimere Smith, who is professionally known as Ne-Yo, performed during the event.
Only one question was given to the final three contestants. Each of the finalists was asked to share the most important lesson she has learned in life and how she would apply it to her time as Miss Universe.
“I grew up in a family filled with women and each one of them taught me something very important,” Gutierrez answered through her translator. “But what I always remembered is that by working hard and chasing for our dreams and by having courage and strength and willingness to achieve these dreams, we can achieve anything we want in this lifetime. And tonight, I am proving this. I am here at Miss Universe.”
Meanwhile, Miss Laos On-anong Homsombath won Best National Costume. Miss Spain Angela Ponce did not make it to the quarterfinals but was honored onstage as the first ever transwoman Miss Universe candidate in the international level.
Miss Puerto Rico Kiara Ortega and Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie made it to the Top 5. Miss Costa Rica Natalia Carvajal, Miss Curacao Akisha Albert, Miss Nepal Manita Devkota, Miss Canada Marta Stepien and Miss Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin finished in the Top 10.
