South Africa almost repeated the only back-to-back win in Miss Universe by Venezuela. Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green was named first runner-up during the Miss Universe 2018 coronation night.
“Many countries across the world are experiencing an increase in immigration. Do you think countries should limit the number of refugees allowed across their borders?” Green was asked during the competition.
“I think that every country should have their own rules and regulations,” Green answered. “But for a thriving society and for all of us in society, we have to understand that we are all human and we are all more alike than we are not so we should be open to loving each other, accepting each other. It doesn’t matter where we come from.”
Miss Universe 2018
Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa crowned Miss Philippines Catriona Gray as Miss Universe 2018 at the IMPACT Arena, Exhibition and Convention Center in Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand on December 17, 2018. It was the fourth time the beauty pageant’s winner is from the Philippines.
Nel-Peters is the second Miss South Africa to win Miss Universe. The first one was Margaret Gardiner, who was crowned in 1978 by Miss Universe 1977 Janelle Commissiong of Trinidad and Tobago.
Venezuela is the first and still the only country to win two Miss Universe crowns consecutively. Both from Venezuela, Miss Universe 2008 Dayanara Mendoza crowned Stefania Fernandez as Miss Universe 2009 at the Imperial Ballroom in Atlantis Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas on August 23, 2009.
The Miss Universe 2018 coronation night was hosted by Steve Harvey along with Ashley Graham, Carson Kressley and Lu Sierra. Singer-songwriter Shaffer Chimere Smith, who is professionally known as Ne-Yo, performed during the event.
Only one question was given to the final three contestants. Each of the finalists was asked to share the most important lesson she has learned in life and how she would apply it to her time as Miss Universe.
“Throughout my life, I’ve been exposed to both those who are privileged and underprivileged and what I’ve learned is that we are all human,” Green answered. “We all want to be loved, we all want to belong, and we all want to be seen so we should treat each other that way. Thank you.”
Joining Gray and Green in the final three was Miss Venezuela Sthefany Gutierrez, who was named second runner-up. Miss Laos On-anong Homsombath won Best National Costume while Miss Spain Angela Ponce was honored onstage as the first ever transwoman Miss Universe candidate in the international level.
Miss Puerto Rico Kiara Ortega and Miss Vietnam H’Hen Nie made it to the Top 5. Miss Costa Rica Natalia Carvajal, Miss Curacao Akisha Albert, Miss Nepal Manita Devkota, Miss Canada Marta Stepien and Miss Thailand Sophida Kanchanarin finished in the Top 10.
