The Co-operative Republic of Guyana is a country in South America. Known as Dutch Guiana from 1667 to 1814 and British Guiana from 1814 to 1966, the country is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Suriname to the east, Venezuela to the west and Brazil to the southwest and the south.
Guyana gained its independence from the United Kingdom on May 26, 1966 and was admitted to the United Nations on September 20, 1966. On February 23, 1970, Guyana became a republic.
David A. Granger, 74, is the incumbent and ninth president of Guyana. He assumed office on May 16, 2015.
