Sandra Oh was born in Nepean, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on July 20, 1971 to Korean immigrants Oh Junsu, a businessman, and Jeon Young Nam, a biochemist. The following are 13 interesting things about the Canadian-Korean actor, who currently plays Eve Polastri in “Killing Eve.”

  1. She was elected student council president while in Sir Robert Borden High School in Nepean.
  2. She chose to study drama at the National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal, Quebec, Canada over a four-year journalism scholarship to Carleton University in Ottawa.
  3. She speaks French, which she learned while studying at the National Theatre School of Canada.
  4. In 1989, she played Gwen in the Canadian series “Denim Blues,” which marked her first TV series role.
  5. In 1989, she starred in “The Journey Home,” which was her first short film.
  6. In 1994, she played Jade Li in “Double Happiness,” which marked her first full-length film role.
  7. She was uncredited in the 2003 film “Owning Mahowny,” in which she played a craps player.
  8. From 2005 to 2014, she appeared in 220 episode of the ABC medical drama series “Grey’s Anatomy,” in which she played Dr. Cristina Yang.
  9. She is the first actor of Asian descent to earn a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
  10. She is the first actor of Asian descent to win two awards at the Golden Globe Awards.
  11. She and Alexander Payne married in 2003, separated in 2005 and divorced in 2006.
