Musicians and music fans in the Philippines were shocked by the news about the death of Brian Velasco. He was the drummer of the Filipino rock band Razorback and a former drum instructor at RJ Guitar Center.
Velasco committed suicide by jumping off a building, music promoter Dudee Alfonso told the Philippine Inquirer. The former said goodbye to his friends in a Facebook group chat page before leaping from the balcony of a condominium in Malate, Manila, Philippines, according to the music promoter.
The act was streamed on the Facebook Live app of Velasco’s phone at around 9:45 a.m. on January 16, 2019, Manila Bulletin reported. The video has since been taken down.
On November 20, 2018, Velasco had a hard time celebrating his birthday after the death of his dog. He took to Facebook to pay tribute to the dog.
The late Razorback drummer went to Brent International School Baguio, Brent International School Manila and De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. He also studied at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies.
Including Velasco, Razorback had four active members. The other three are bassist Louie Talan and guitarists Tirso Ripoll and Manuel Legarda.
Vocalist Jose Mari Cuervo, drummer Miguel Ortigas, guitarist David Aguirre and vocalist Kevin Roy were past members of Razorback. Originally named Outrider, the band was formed by Ripoll, Ortigas and Aguirre in the 1980s.
After winning the Battle of the Bands of the University of the Philippines organization Upsilon Sigma Phi-NU107, the band was renamed Razorback with Cuervo as the vocalist and Talan as the bassist. Eventually, Roy replaced Cuervo on vocals while Ortigas and Aguirre were replaced by Velasco and Legarda, respectively.
On June 10, 2018, Razorback announced Roy’s departure from the band. After this, the band’s lineup featured vocalist Nicole Asensio and guitarist Ira Cruz.
