Facebook and Instagram were down on March 13, 2019. The online social media and social networking service company co-founded by Mark Zuckerberg took to Twitter to address the issue.
According to Facebook, the issue is not related to a Distributed Denial of Service attack. DDoS attack happens when a DoS attack is caused by a single system targeted by multiple compromised systems that are often infected with a Trojan.
Aside from Instagram, Facebook also acquired WhatsApp and Oculus Rift. While Instagram is also down, it appears that WhatsApp was not immediately affected by the outage.
Facebook Messenger is not working properly, as well. The messaging app and platform was independently developed by Facebook and was initially released on August 9, 2011.
The outage affected not only the United States. Users in Asia, Europe and South America also experienced issues accessing Facebook and Instagram.
