ONE Championship has just announced that Andrew Leone, 29, of the United States has withdrawn from his ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix quarter-final bout against Danny “The King” Kingad, 23, of the Philippines at “ONE: A New Era” on March 31, 2019 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan. Senzo Ikeda, 36, of Japan will fill in for Leone to face the Filipino mixed martial artist who is training out of Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines.
Leone was forced to withdraw due to injury. Replacing him in the highly anticipated eight-man ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix is Ikeda, who sports a professional MMA record of 12 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw.
A former undefeated boxer and a veteran of the Japanese martial arts scene, Ikeda captured the Pancrase Flyweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Mamoru Yamaguchi, 41, on August 20, 2017. Coming off a sensational fifth-round stoppage victory over fellow ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix entrant Yuya “Little Piranha” Wakamatsu, 24, of Japan, Ikeda now seeks to leave a lasting impression in his ONE Championship debut as he takes on Kingad.
A former ONE World Title challenger and a premier flyweight talent from the famed Team Lakay, Kingad owns an impressive professional MMA record of 12 wins and 1 loss. He is a a true warrior from the mountains of the Philippines and a tremendous striker who possesses well-rounded grappling skills.
In Kingad’s most recent bout, he defeated rising Tatsumitsu “The Sweeper” Wada, 30, of Japan by unanimous decision to earn a spot in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix. “ONE: A New Era” marks the Team Lakay fighter’s ninth outing in ONE Championship.
“ONE: A New Era” will feature the best and brightest stars of ONE Championship including ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang, 34, who is set to defend his title against Japanese legend and former ONE World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, in the main event.
There will be a trio of co-main events. ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan, 31, will put her belt on the line against ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, 22.
ONE Middleweight and Light Heavyweight World Champion “The Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, 33, will stake his middleweight crown against Japan’s Ken Hasegawa, 32, in a rematch. ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, 31, will defend his championship against former titleholder Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, 38, in a trilogy match.
The rest of the quarter-final bouts of the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix will also be held at “ONE: A New Era.” Wakamatsu will face Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, 32, of the United States, Wada will face Ivanildo “Monstinho” Delfino, 29, of Japan and former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov, 31, of Kazakhstan will face former ONE World Title challenger Reece “Lightning” McLaren, 27, of Australia.
