Training out of Team Kyokushin, Hitman MMA and Kuwait Fight Club, Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales, 31, of Albay, Philippines was one of the winners at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” It was his third victory in ONE Championship.

Featuring two kickboxing contests, two Muay Thai bouts and 11 mixed martial arts matches, “ONE: Roots of Honor” took place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 12, 2019. In the first bout of the evening, Gonzales faced faced Akihiro “Superjap” Fujisawa, 39, of Tokyo, Japan in an MMA match in the strawweight division with Yoshinori Umeki as the referee.

Early in the first round, Fujisawa attempted a takedown but found himself getting caught in a deep guillotine choke. Gonzales postured up and tightened the choke forcing Fujisawa to tap out abruptly.

Umeki put a stop to the strawweight contest after 1 minute and 19 seconds in the first round. Gonzales submitted Fujisawa via guillotine choke.

Winning at “ONE: Roots of Honor” improved Gonzales’s professional MMA record to 4 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Fujisawa now has 5 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw.

“ONE: Roots of Honor” marked Gonzales’s fifth outing in the promotion. A Kyoskushin karate black belt and a three-time Filipino National Champion in karate, he has been competing professionally since 2009.

Currently, Gonzales is riding a three-bout winning streak. He earned his first win in ONE Championship at “ONE: Total Victory” on September 16, 2017 at the Jakarta Convention Center in Jakarta, Indonesia where he submitted Deligerihu “The Little Squirrel” Liu of China.

On October 6, 2018, Gonzales earned his second ONE Championship win at “ONE: Kingdom of Heroes” at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. He submitted Dodi “The Maung” Mardian of Indonesia.

Including the Philippines and Japan, 18 countries were represented at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” The other countries were Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Indonesia, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Romania, Serbia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam and the United States.

Gonzales was one of the four hometown heroes at “ONE: Roots of Honor.” Fujisawa was one of the four fighters who represented Japan.
