Abra is one of the six provinces of the Cordillera Administrative Region of the Philippines. The others are Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga and Mountain Province.

Born in Bangued, Abra, Maria Jocelyn “Joy” Valera Bernos served as the congresswoman of the province from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2016. She has been the governor of the province since June 30, 2016.

Bangued is the capital of Abra. The province has 27 municipalities namely Bangued, Boliney, Bucay, Bucloc, Daguioman, Danglas, Dolores, La Paz, Lacub, Lagangilang, Lagayan, Langiden, Licuan-Baay, Luba, Malibcong, Manabo, Peñarrubia, Pidigan, Pilar, Sallapadan, San Isidro, San Juan, San Quintin, Tayum, Tineg, Tubo and Villaviciosa.

Eustaquio “Takit” Purugganan Bersamin was born in Bangued to Dr. Luis F. Bersamin Sr. and Rosario Purruganan. Takit served as the governor of Abra from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2016.

On April 3, 2009, Takit’s brother Lucas “Luke” Purugganan Bersamin became an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. On November 28, 2018, Luke became the chief justice.

On June 5, 2011, Leslie Ching represented Abra at Miss Philippines Earth 2011 and competed against 47 other candidates at the Puerto Princesa Coliseum in Puerto Princesa, Philippines. She was unplaced.
